AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP, STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES OF AUTOCRATIC LEADERS
Autocratic leadership is a management style where one person controls all the decisions and takes very little inputs from other group members. Autocratic leaders make choices or decisions based on their own beliefs and do not involve others for their suggestion or advice. This type of leadership style is seen mostly in businesses which are relatively small with fewer employees.
Common features of Autocratic Leadership-
* The leader holding so much power and decision making authority
* The staff perform simple repetitive tasks
* Single skilling
* Followers require direct supervision at all times.
* Workers have limited information
* Discourages creativity and out-of-the box thinking
Autocratic style has both strengths and weaknesses. When and where the authoritarian style is most useful can depend on factors such as the situation, the type of task the group is working on, and characteristics of the team members.
* Quick decision making.
* Subordinates like to work under centralized authority
* Less competent subordinates required.
* Clear communication
* The leader can take charge of the group, assign tasks to different members, and establish solid deadlines for projects to be finished.
Weaknesses-
* No contribution from subordinates because they tend to passively communicate
* The decision-making process is usually unilateral
* Hurts morale and leads to resentment
* Creating a dependency culture
* Ignores or impairs creative solutions and expertise from subordinates
* Less creative and innovative environment.
The autocratic leadership style can be useful in following instances,
*Autocratic leadership can be effective in small groups where leadership is lacking. In such situations, a strong leader who utilizes an autocratic style can take charge of the group, assign tasks to different members, and establish solid deadlines for projects to be finished.
* In situations that are particularly stressful, such as during military conflicts, group members may prefer an autocratic style. This allows members of the group to focus on performing specific tasks without worrying about making complex decisions.

ReplyDeleteBecause autocratic leaders make decisions without consulting the group, people in the group may dislike that they are unable to contribute ideas. you have also found that autocratic leadership often results in a lack of creative solutions to problems, which can ultimately hurt the group from performing. Well done work.
